Language of Selves – Paris Contemporary

Gallery CNK is pleased to present Language of Selves – Paris Contemporary, an exhibition featuring three contemporary artists who are based in Paris, France, and have each established their own distinctive artistic practice.

Over time, these artists have accumulated layers of emotional and cultural sensibilities, constructing spaces on the pictorial surface through their own visual languages, much as one might write an essay. For them, painting is not an act of representing a particular subject, but rather a trace and an energy emerging from within—sometimes intentionally, sometimes unintentionally. Their works offer an experience of a fundamental artistic sensibility found somewhere between the two- and three-dimensional, figuration and abstraction, drawing and painting.

Patrice Pantin  (b. 1963, France)

“The notion of what is visible and what is hidden lies at the heart of my work. A drawing reveals its true value only when one walks around it and views it from the best angle. The work also seems to continually evade the gaze, moving as though in flight, playing with the light from moment to moment and engaging the viewer in a game of hide-and-seek. ”

Pantin cuts into sheets of paper and covers the prepared surface with black and primary-colored paint, as though pouring it out in accordance with the unconscious movements of his hand. At the very moment the work begins to take on a life of its own, he removes pieces of adhesive film one by one, leaving lines behind on the paper. These lines become charged with a vital, dynamic energy, while the colors seem to writhe into organic forms as though they have come alive. Through repeated acts of drawing, cutting, painting, and burning, Pantin reveals the direct energy inherent in the material itself.

Christophe Robe  (b. 1966, France)

“For me, the forms in my work are carriers of emotion.  Unstable figures exist within unstable spaces. It is like a kind of ‘theatre’ in which forms, fragments of bodies, and slightly displaced figures are continually transformed. They do not tell a specific story, yet they inevitably invite a deeper narrative interpretation of painting and drawing. To me, they seem like carriers of emotion, moving through the upheavals of the world and the transformations of our inner lives.”

The organic forms in Robe’s works are intertwined with familiarity and unease, recognition and tension. These disparate elements are expressions of the various emotions within the artist, at times appearing as fragmented forms or cartoon-like characters and becoming a means through which he communicates with the world.

Yoo Hye-Sook  (b. 1964, Korea)

Through the accumulation of meditative, almost ritualistic acts upon the pictorial surface, Yoo Hye-Sook constructs a distinctive sense of space and time.

Following her signature works in black came immersive fields of blue that seem at once like sea and sky, and then light emerging through layers of different colors. When one quietly contemplates these surfaces, light seems to seep through the breathing spaces left by the passing brush, recalling ‘bibaek’ in traditional Korean painting. The light appears almost alive, creating Yoo’s distinctive sense of space.

Her process of repeatedly building up layers of paint may appear familiar to Korean viewers, yet her work possesses an unmistakable sense of the sublime rarely found elsewhere. Perhaps it comes from the somewhat rough-hewn purity concealed beneath its stillness.

Through this exhibition, we hope viewers will experience an encounter with the inner depths of these three artists: through phenomena revealed materially, forms emerging from the unconscious, and light seeping through repeated acts of accumulation.

Marking the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France in 2026, we hope this exhibition will offer an opportunity to reflect on the seriousness of art and the question of existence that resonates across both countries. 

갤러리CNK는 프랑스 파리를 기반으로 각자의 독창적인 작품 세계를 구축해 온 세 명의 현대미술가가 참여하는 〈Language of Selves – Paris Contemporary〉를 개최한다.

 세 작가는 오랜 시간 축적해온 정서적·문화적 감성을 저마다의 조형 언어로 풀어내며, 마치 한 편의 에세이를 쓰듯 화면 위에 공간을 구축한다. 이들에게 회화란 어떤 대상을 재현하는 일이 아니라, 의도적으로 혹은 의도치 않게 드러나는 내면의 흔적이자 에너지이다. 평면과 입체, 구상과 추상, 드로잉과 회화의 경계 그 어딘가에서 마주하게 되는 예술의 근원적인 감각을 이들의 작업을 통해 경험할 수 있다.

Patrice Pantin (b. 1963, France)

"보이는 것과 숨겨진 것의 개념은 제 작업의 핵심입니다. 드로잉은 직접 걸어 다니며 가장 좋은 각도에서 바라볼 때 비로소 그 진가를 발견할 수 있습니다. 작품은 또한 시선을 피해 끊임없이 날아다니며 매 순간 빛과 유희하고, 관람자와 숨바꼭질을 하는 듯한 특성을 지니고 있습니다."

팽탕은 종이 위에 칼집을 내고, 준비된 화면 위에 무의식의 흐름을 따르는 손끝으로 검은색과 원색의 물감을 쏟아붓듯 뒤덮는다. 작품이 스스로 생명력을 얻기 시작하는 바로 그 순간, 접착 필름을 한 조각씩 떼어내 종이 위에 선을 남긴다. 그렇게 드러난 선들은 강렬한 역동성을 품고, 색은 마치 생명을 얻은 듯 유기적인 형태로 꿈틀거린다. 그는 긋고, 자르고, 칠하고, 태우는 행위를 반복하며 물성이 지닌 날것 그대로의 에너지를 드러낸다.

Christophe Robe (b. 1966, France)

"저에게 작업 속 형체들은 일종의 감정 전달자입니다. 불안정한 공간 속에 불안정한 형상들이 존재합니다. 형태와 신체의 파편, 다소 어긋난 형상들이 끊임없이 변형되는 일종의 ‘극장’과 같습니다. 그것들은 특정한 이야기를 들려주지는 않지만, 필연적으로 회화와 드로잉에 대한 보다 깊은 서사적 해석을 불러일으킵니다. 저에게 그것들은 세상의 격변과 내면의 변천사를 관통하는 감정의 전달자처럼 느껴집니다."

로브의 작품 속 유기적인 형상들은 친숙함과 불안감, 익숙함과 긴장감이 뒤얽힌 채 존재한다. 서로 이질적인 요소들은 작가 내면의 다양한 감정을 드러내며, 때로는 파편적인 형상이나 만화적인 캐릭터의 모습으로 나타나 세상과 소통하는 매개체가 된다.

Yoo Hye-Sook (b. 1964, Korea / France)

유혜숙은 화면 위에 수행과도 같은 행위의 축적으로 독특한 시공간을 구축한다. 그녀의 대표적인 검은빛 작업에 이어, 바다인 듯 하늘인 듯 깊이 빠져드는 푸른색 연작들, 그리고 층위들 사이를 비집고 나오는 빛들을 품은 다양한 색의 작품들. 조용한 화면을 바라보고 있으면 한국화의  ‘비백(飛白)’처럼 붓이 지나간 숨통같은 흔적들 사이로 살아 꿈틀거리듯 빛이 스며 나오며 특유의 공간감을 만들어낸다. 물감을 여러 겹 쌓아 올리는 작업 방식은 한국인에겐 익숙해 보일 수 있겠지만 분명 그녀의 작업에는 다른 작품들에서는 쉽게 볼 수 없는 숭고미가 느껴진다.  차분함 속에 가려진 투박한듯한 순수함 때문일까.

이번 전시를 통해 물질로 드러나는 현상, 무의식 속에서 나타난 형상, 그리고 반복된 축적 속에서 배어나오는 빛을 따라 세 작가의 심연과 마주하는 경험을 할 수 있기를 기대한다.
